Papakainga

New Two Bedroom Units

The Mangatawa Papakainga is a housing project designed specifically for our Kuia and Kaumatua shareholders.  It consists of ten new two bedroom rental homes with carports, situated onMangatawa land near the foot of Mangatawa hill overlooking Te Akau ki Papamoa and out to Tuhua and Mauao. 

The papakainga is a partnership with Housing New Zealand where by Mangatawa provided the land and project management and co-ordination.  Housing New Zealand provided a grant of $1.17 million and a loan of $1.1million.  The Loan must be repaid by Mangatawa over a 25 year term but is interest free for the first ten years, within in which time we should aim to repay it.

To assist with repaying the loan and providing subsidised rents to our Kuia and Kaumatua we also entered into a leasing agreement with Housing New Zealand whereby, we build and own them, then lease them to Housing New Zealand to tenant them on the basis that Mangatawa Kui and Kaumatua are given priority in the selection.  This means that Housing New Zealand provide us with a commercial lease rental for each unit which will repay the mortgage and tenant them to our shareholders at a subsidised rental, of no more than 25% of that persons weekly income. 

All of the new units have been allocated after a robust selection process.  To qualify for the new units you must be a shareholder; must be over 60 years of age; must be committed to our Marae Tamapahore; must meet Housing New Zealand criteria (i.e. can not already own your own home or have lots of cash in the bank).  If you would like to be put on the waiting list as units come free please contact out office staff. 

One Bedroom Units

All four one bedroom units have come available.  The weekly rent is approximately $110 per week.  To be eligible you must be a shareholder, 55years of age and over; committed to the Marae and any other criteria of the Board established from time to time.  We encourage you to contact the office if you are interested in renting a one bedroom.
